It is a one-year program focused on deepening knowledge of gender, feminist, and queer theory, as well as research methodologies and work in these areas. The program is also affiliated with the university’s Centre for Gender Studies, which hosts a range of academic and research activities with national and international professionals in the field. Therefore, it offers several opportunities to connect with other professionals and gain new perspectives and experiences.

– What inspired you to apply for this program and this scholarship?

I have been working on gender and violence issues for some time through my professional practice, and I felt that I needed to deepen my theoretical knowledge on the subject. The United Kingdom is a country where gender studies, sociology, and development studies have been widely explored, as well as public policies based on an evidence-based approach. In addition, it is a country with many international students, which greatly enriches classroom discussions and the overall learning experience. This has been my main motivation for applying. And, of course, it is also an opportunity to get to know another country and explore it during my free time.

I applied for the Chevening Scholarship because, in addition to being a comprehensive scholarship, I believe it offers much more than a funding opportunity. Chevening is, in fact, a community of people with great initiative, creative ideas, and a desire to generate change in their countries. Having the opportunity to be part of this network and meet other people committed to making a positive impact in the world, across different fields, was something that greatly inspired me. I feel very happy and excited to be part of this great community of leaders.

– There is a significant need to apply a gender perspective in mental health policies in our country and across the region. What are your aspirations in this regard when you return to Peru?

I believe that incorporating a gender perspective into public policies, in general, is an area where our country still has a long way to go. We know that rates of gender-based violence remain quite high. Violence against women and LGBT people is an issue where much more work is still needed, and I would love to contribute, in any way I can, to making Peru a more equal and fair country for everyone. I believe that fighting gender-based violence is a task that will take us a long time, and I hope to gain new tools that will help me contribute to this important issue for our country. Furthermore, since gender-based violence is a psychosocial issue, we have much to contribute from the perspective of mental health. In the future, I would love to contribute to the development of public policies that allow us to envision a country free from violence.

– How do you think this experience will contribute to your role at De-mentes?

Deepening my knowledge of gender issues will help us incorporate new perspectives into the projects we develop at De-mentes. I hope we can create new initiatives that, from a gender perspective, allow us to contribute to the well-being of our country. I believe that, from the field of mental health, we still have much work to do in terms of reducing stigma, providing information, promoting prevention, and addressing processes related to violence. We will surely be sharing new initiatives soon!

– What message would you give to our community and to those who aspire to pursue a program abroad in order to apply what they have learned in their own countries?

I believe that the most important thing is to find passion in what you want to do. Having clarity about what you want to change and what you want to contribute to. It is also important to think about the tools you already have and what you need to make this dream possible. In addition, I would say that it is essential to prepare yourself, listen to trusted people who can provide feedback, and take the leap! Finally, I would like to say that applying to a competitive program or scholarship opportunity can be challenging for our mental health. The application process itself is full of self-discovery and learning, but I also believe it is important that we are kind to ourselves throughout our journeys, identify what works for us and what does not.

Congratulations, Ana Sofía!

#EveryoneForMentalHealth

¡Orgullo De-mente!
