However, it is hardly news that depression is often not taken seriously and that there is a great deal of misinformation surrounding it. In this context, a few days ago, a video was published on YouTube that effectively outlines the characteristics of this mental health condition and how it typically affects individuals:

In the video, the narrator explains the differences between sadness and depression, pointing out that the latter is actually a far more complex set of symptoms that accompany those sad thoughts, including things such as:

  • Losing interest in hobbies and other enjoyable activities
  • Loss of appetite
  • Beginning to sleep excessively or not sleeping at all
  • Feeling guilty about everything
  • Lack of motivation
  • Feeling slower and less capable, with concentration difficulties
  • In the most severe cases, experiencing frequent suicidal thoughts

Likewise, the video highlights that depression does not simply disappear by "making an effort" or through "willpower," as it is a real illness that affects our brain, which, like any other organ in our body, can become ill. This mental health condition affects numerous neural pathways in our brain and causes a decrease in neurotransmitters—those substances that transmit information from one neuron to another (e.g., serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline).
